Swan Falls Grade

The grade down into the Snake River Canyon is as steep as 12% in one place. It's pretty interesting to see the layers of basalt occasionally separated by large deposits of what looks to be ancient river sediments. I would like to learn more about geology so I could have a better idea about the processes involved in creating formations like these.
