Mushroom

The mushroom which is found above ground is just the fruiting body of the fungus which is primarily located below ground. It appears that part of the casing out of which the mushroom grew stuck to the cap (along with some bits of the sandy soil).

Location: Sealion Cove Trail, Kruzof Island, Southeast Alaska
