White Mountain Heather
Cassiope mertensiana

White mountain-heather is a small, slow growing alpine to subalpine plant that can form dense mats and is fairly common above the treeline around Sitka. The species honors Carl Heinrich Mertens, a German naturalist who discovered it at Sitka in 1827.

Picture taken 4 June 1998 on Gavan Ridge.
