Nurse Log

Nurse logs are trees that have fallen and started to rot. New trees apparently do much better when they get started on a nurse log. The tree growing here clearly got its start on a nurse log that is now falling apart. It lasted long enough for the tree to form a root structure that grew down around and through the nurselog to anchor into the soil on either side of this stream channel.
